In 1700, Spanish ships arrived in the New World colonies, loaded with goods from Spain. A popular product was sweet wine stored in barrels, which were then emptied after use. These empty barrels were filled with Chinguirito, the rum produced in Mexico and shipped to Spain, thus absorbing the wood flavors and aromas of the barrels, which gave it very particular characteristics. The resulting product became very popular in Spain and local producers saw this as a threat to the sale of their products. Therefore, the King of Spain banned the production of this rum in the New World. Chinguirito was also known as Habanero, because the last stop on the way back to Spain from the New World was Habana, Cuba, i.e. Havana. The El Ron Prohibido 15 Year Old Rum is then rested using the “Solera” method, in which the oldest rum contained in the blend has matured for 15 years. Bottled in an elegant, traditional bottle, it should be served neat so that the sweet and bitter notes can unfold.
